KUCHING: The closing ceremony of the Hero Mathematics Final Competition – Piala Dato Sri Roland Sagah 2025 was held with great success, bringing together 1,448 primary school students from 111 schools across Kuching, Samarahan and Serian.

The event was officiated by Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD), Datuk Dr Annuar Rapa’ee.

“This competition proves that mathematics can unite us through healthy competition and a shared dedication to knowledge,” said Dr Annuar who delivered the speech on behalf of Sarawak’s Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development (MEITD) Datuk Seri Roland Sagah Wee Inn.

He said this at the closing ceremony of the Hero Mathematics Final Competition Piala Dato Sri Roland Sagah 2025 at Dewan Jubli, UITM Sarawak, Samarahan Campus.

He praised UiTM Sarawak for organising the programme and highlighted the importance of mathematics in building knowledge and unity among students.

“The programme aimed to make learning mathematics fun, interactive, and challenging an effort that aligns with the ministry’s mission to enhance quality human capital and strengthen education as a key driver of development towards Sarawak’s 2030 goals,” he said.

He also shared several initiatives by MEITD to support students, including free higher education for qualified Sarawakian students, the Dual Language Programme (DLP) for Mathematics and Science in English, annual RM1,200 living allowances for students from low-income families, and the Sarawak Special Teacher Recruitment Programme to place more local teachers in rural schools especially in Maths and Science.

He noted improvements in Sarawak’s 2024 SPM results but emphasised the need for continuous effort.

“Competitions like Hero Mathematics can strengthen students’ mathematical foundation and confidence, especially in preparation for exams,” he said.

He encouraged students to see mathematics not as something to fear, but as a language of innovation and future opportunities, especially in STEM fields that support Sarawak’s digital economy growth.
