KUCHING: Fostering mutual trust between the government and the people is vital for a harmonious and resilient city, said Kuching South City Council (MBKS) Mayor Datuk Wee Hong Seng.

He said when trust is nurtured, it encourages the growth of noble values such as loyalty, justice, courage and kindness, which are essential not only in religious or communal settings but also in urban governance.

“MBKS is committed to upholding these values in city administration, by remaining loyal to the people, fair in our policies, and inclusive towards all communities regardless of race or religion,” he said.

He said this in his speech at the Guan Gong birthday celebration dinner on Sunday (Jul 20).

Describing the event as more than just a religious occasion, he said it served as a powerful symbol of cultural strength and unity among Kuching’s multiracial community.

He also highlighted the important role played by houses of worship such as temples — not just as places of spiritual devotion but also as active centres for community welfare, education and social outreach.

He commended the organisers’ efforts in fostering unity and preserving cultural heritage, adding that such initiatives demonstrate how culture can serve as a bridge to a more united and tolerant society.

“MBKS will continue to support cultural events that promote inclusivity and harmony.

“These efforts are important in shaping Kuching’s modern identity while staying rooted in its cultural heritage,” he said.
