LIMBANG: A local man and contraband items worth more than RM139,000 were seized by troops from the Ninth Battalion of the Border Regiment (9 RS) at the border area during a patrol operation here early this morning.

The suspect, who was driving a Perodua Myvi vehicle, was intercepted at 2:00 am while heading towards a jetty near the national border.

The Ninth Infantry Brigade said upon inspection, the man was found to be without any form of identification document and was believed to be attempting to smuggle goods out of the country via the river route.

“The troops seized 680 cartons of cigarettes and 16 cartons of alcoholic beverages of various brands, along with the vehicle used in the attempt.

“The value of the items seized is valued at RM139,228.30,” it said in a statement today.

It added that all items were handed over to the Royal Malaysian Customs Department for further action.

The Ninth Infantry Brigade further said the Malaysian army will continue its commitment to tighten border security and prevent cross-border crime.
