KUCHING: The upcoming 10th edition of the Sarawak Energy Isthmus Run is set to introduce its first-ever full international marathon covering a distance of 42km.
Minister of Utility and Telecommunications Datuk Julaihi Narawi said the landmark event will take place on Aug 10, and is organised by Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) as part of its ongoing commitment to promote health, sustainability, and community engagement.

“This is the first time we are hosting a full international marathon at 42 kilometres.
“In addition to the 42km, we will also feature other race categories, namely 21km, 10km, and a 5km Fun Run, which we expect a lot of interest from the public,” he told a press conference here today (July 28).
In total, 5,815 runners have registered for the event, with participants representing 15 countries including Malaysia, Australia, Bangladesh, Brunei, China, Ethiopia, India, Indonesia, Japan, Kenya, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, and Thailand.
The 42km marathon will be flagged off at 1 am on race day, and runners must complete the course within 7 hours to qualify for a finisher’s medal and exclusive t-shirt.
Other race categories include a 21km half marathon (flag-off at 4 am), 10km (5.45 am), and a 5km Fun Run (6.30 am), with all events expected to conclude before 8 am.
The event has garnered significant attention not only from local athletes but also internationally recognised distance runners. Notably, 30 participants from Kenya—a country renowned for producing world-class long-distance athletes—have confirmed their entry in the 42km race.
Malaysia’s own celebrated marathoner Edan Syah will also be competing and is set to host a public running clinic on Aug 9 at a hotel here.
“In terms of prizes, RM185,000 in cash and rewards will be awarded across all categories.
“The winner of the 42km international marathon will take home RM10,000, along with a medal and finisher’s shirt,” Julaihi added.
Participants will also stand a chance to win attractive items through a lucky draw worth RM25,000.
Julaihi also pointed out that 100 per cent of the event’s proceeds will be donated to local charitable organisations and NGOs, including the Sarawak Orphans Welfare Board (PERYATIM).
Race kit collection will take place from Aug 7 to 9 at UCSI Hotel, with updates to be shared on the Sarawak Energy Isthmus Run official Facebook page and website.
On potential concerns about air quality due to the haze season, Julaihi said that Sarawak Energy is monitoring the situation closely and will seek advice from the relevant authorities if necessary.
“We pray that the air quality will be good on the day of the run.
“Nevertheless, Sarawak Energy will liaise with health and environment agencies to make informed decisions,” he said.
Among those present at the press conference were Sarawak Energy’s Contract and Procurement senior vice president Yusri Safri and Electricity Supply director Muhammad Randie Abdullah.
