KUCHING: Sarawak will send a study mission to Cambodia to assess the feasibility of establishing a rice-processing centre, as part of efforts to expand agricultural cooperation between the two sides.
Senior Minister in Charge of Special Mission (Islamic Affairs) of Cambodia, Datuk Dr Othsman Hassan, said Cambodia has abundant rice production but faces challenges in processing.
“The Premier of Sarawak will send a team to Cambodia to assess the feasibility of building a rice-processing centre.
“In the past, our rice was exported to Thailand and Vietnam. If this centre is realised, we can expand exports to other countries,” he said.
He said this after paying a courtesy call to Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg at the Kompleks Satria Pertiwi here today.
Othsman added that Cambodia also produces over one million tonnes of cashew nuts annually but lacks packaging facilities, offering investment opportunities for Sarawak.
“We welcome Sarawak investors to explore these opportunities.
“With our own ports, we also hope Sarawak can supply liquefied petroleum gas (LPG),” he said, adding that the mission will focus on these potential areas of collaboration.
