PADAWAN: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) has reiterated its firm stance against illegal gambling activities, particularly the growing issue of online gambling within its jurisdiction.

In a statement, MPP Chairman Councillor Tan Kai said the council continues to work closely with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) through joint operations, including the revocation of licences linked to illegal practices.

“We are always ready and willing to cooperate fully with the PDRM and other relevant agencies to combat online gambling and other illegal activities, in order to make Padawan a safer and more liveable place for all,” he said.

Tan clarified that MPP’s licensing powers are limited.

“I believe all the alleged coffee shop premises are operating without a council licence.

“As for convenience shops, the issuance of licences does not fall under the purview of the local council,” he explained, responding to allegations that the council was not taking action.

He stressed that the council issues eating outlet licences strictly based on health requirements under its by-laws, and that any premises found operating illegally will face enforcement action.

The council also assured the public that it remains deeply concerned about social issues affecting the community and will continue to strengthen collaborative efforts with enforcement agencies to curb online gambling and safeguard public welfare.
