KUCHING: The spread of false information and the rising threats posed by artificial intelligence (AI) must be addressed carefully to prevent the public from being misled, says Deputy Minister of Communications, Teo Nie Ching.

She asserted that false information today spreads faster than the truth.

“In 2023, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) removed 5,367 pieces of fake content. This number increased to 17,245 in 2024. As of Aug 1, 2025 alone, 16,110 cases have already been recorded.

“Even more worrying is that scammers are now using AI to create fake videos and voices to deceive victims. This proves that technology not only brings opportunities but also new threats. Therefore, I remind everyone: if you are unsure, do not share,” she said this when officiating the 2024 Excellent Service Award (APC) Ceremony for the Ministry of Communications (Sarawak Zone) at the P Ramlee Auditorium, RTM complex here today.

She also highlighted the alarming rise in online fraud where in 2023, 6,297 reports were lodged, which soared to 63,652 in 2024. Up to Aug 1 this year, she said MCMC has already taken down 49,082 fraud-related content.

To address these issues, the Ministry of Communications has provided multiple fact-checking channels such as Biar Betul, the Artificial Intelligence Fact Check Assistant (AIFA), and the Sebenarnya.my portal.

Since its launch in Jan, she said AIFA has received 142,257 messages up to Jul 31, 2025 – an average of 769 messages per day.

In total, 691 ministry personnel nationwide received the APC recognition this year – 541 in Peninsular Malaysia, 70 in Sabah, and 80 in Sarawak.

During the event, Teo also presented contributions under the Kasih@HAWANA Fund to the families of two late RTM staff – Muhd Usman Danial Irwan Budi, son of the late Irwan Budi Annuar (in service since 2005), and Paul Jackson Ding, husband of the late Georgina Clare (in service since 2011).
