KUCHING: Sarawak’s efforts to build a greener transportation system have received a major boost with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between Japanese chemical trading giant HighChem and local bus operator Biaramas.

The partnership, signed on Aug 11, aims to accelerate the adoption of hydrogen-powered buses across the state.

Under the MoU, HighChem will provide technical expertise in the sales, retrofitting, and maintenance of fuel cell engine systems to ensure the smooth integration of hydrogen buses into Biaramas’ fleet.

The agreement also includes specialised training programmes for Biaramas personnel covering system knowledge, service, and maintenance, while offering broader guidance on hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and applications.

HighChem President, Ushio Taka, said the collaboration reflects a shared commitment to decarbonisation and innovation.

“This MoU with Biaramas underscores both companies’ commitment to fostering sustainable development and decarbonisation efforts globally, starting from Sarawak under the guidance of Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

“By combining our innovative solutions with Biaramas’ operational excellence, we are confident in contributing significantly to Sarawak’s renewable energy-powered transportation goals,” he said.

HighChem which has established a strong presence in China is conducting a feasibility study in Sarawak as part of its Southeast Asia expansion.

Its advancements in redox flow batteries, green hydrogen production, CO2 electrolysis, and atmospheric CO2 recovery through seawater (eDOC) are expected to support Sarawak’s energy transition strategies.

Biaramas, with decades of experience in public transport and an extensive statewide fleet, said the partnership would help deliver greener mobility options to Sarawakians.

Biaramas director, Lai Sin Kiong, said the partnership gives access to advanced hydrogen technology, supporting reliable, eco-friendly transport and reflecting the company’s commitment to a greener future.

“Partnering with HighChem allows us to access cutting-edge hydrogen technology and expertise, enabling us to provide reliable and environmentally friendly transportation options for the people of Sarawak.

“This collaboration is a testament to our dedication to a greener future,” Lai said.
