SRI AMAN: Plans to build the Sarawak State Boxing Centre in Sri Aman have been submitted to Youth, Sports and Entrepreneur Development Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah for consideration.

Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Francis Harden Hollis said the proposed five-acre site is located next to the Sri Aman Indoor Stadium.

Francis, who is also the Simanggang assemblyman, said the centre would include hostels for men and women, a dining hall, and other training facilities.

“The project paper has been prepared with an estimated cost of RM20 million. We are now awaiting approval.

“With strong backing from Sarawak Boxing Association (SABA) president Datuk Rahman Lariwoo, I believe this training centre will be approved and built quickly. It will be used to prepare Sarawak boxers for SUKMA,” he told reporters at the closing of the 4th Sarawak Open Boxing Championship last Saturday.

He added that he hopes the facility can be completed before the 2027 SEA Games to allow state athletes to train there.

Rahman, meanwhile, said Sri Aman was chosen as the location due to its central geography and history of producing talented boxers.

This year’s championship drew 123 participants from across Sarawak, Peninsular Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore.
