MIRI: Seven inactive cryptocurrency mining servers and illegal direct tapping cables have been uncovered at a rented semi-detached double-storey property in Jalan Besi Pujut here.

The operation was carried out by Sarawak Energy Berhad’s (SEB) operations and retail arm, Syarikat SESCO Berhad (SESCO), following a public tip-off about suspicious activity.

A meter inspection team found the illegal connections and seized the equipment in the presence of the informant, who acted as a witness.

“A police report has been lodged, and investigations are ongoing under Section 33(5) of the Electricity Ordinance. If convicted, offenders face a fine of up to RM200,000 and/or imprisonment for up to five years,” SEB said in a press release today (Aug 25).

It added the theft is estimated to have caused monthly losses of approximately RM3,100.

SESCO’s operation team inspects the house.

“This incident highlights a rising trend of unauthorised electricity use by cryptocurrency miners attempting to cut costs, especially amid increasing cryptocurrency prices.

“Such unauthorised connections bypass essential safety mechanisms and pose severe risks, including electrocution, electrical fires and damage to nearby properties,” it said.

SEB also urged the public to remain alert to suspicious activities such as unusually high power consumption, tampered meters, or rooms fitted with continuous cooling systems.

“Property owners should also update the electricity account name when renting out properties and be aware of tenant activities to avoid legal complications,” it added.

Members of the public are encouraged to report any suspicious activities to Sarawak Energy’s Customer Care Centre at 1300-88-3111 or via email at customercare@sarawakenergy.com.

All information will be treated with strict confidentiality.
