KUCHING: A special pass will be introduced to enable seamless travel between Malaysia and Brunei, said Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He said these are among the key matters discussed and have reached agreements during the 26th Malaysia-Brunei Annual Leaders’ Consultation (ALC) at Kompleks Seri Perdana held earlier today.
The consultation was co-chaired by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei.
Abang Johari said mobility between the two countries is being streamlined, with both governments working towards the introduction of a special pass that would enable seamless travel.
“We have had discussions between Malaysia and Brunei. The first matter is mobility, the movement across the border, and a method will be announced later.
“There is also an agreement for a special pass, as both governments are negotiating to enable seamless travel using a single system. This will also cover Sabah,” he told the media after officiating the opening of the Sheikh Othman Sarawak Academic Chair 2025 Conference at the Sarawak Islamic Complex Hall.
Abang Johari added that Sarawak will also enhance power connectivity with Brunei.
“The second matter is that we will be linking electricity to Brunei Darussalam through a 275kV grid connection from Tudan in Miri to Kuala Belait and Lumut,” he said.
The Premier noted that further details on the implementation will be announced once negotiations between Malaysia and Brunei are finalised.
Earlier, Anwar and Sultan Hassanal in a joint statement in conjunction with the ALC said the project will ensure a stable energy supply while creating opportunities for bilateral energy trade within ASEAN.
“Both leaders also recognised Sarawak’s growing role in regional energy cooperation,” the statement read.
The leaders further underscored the importance of enhancing economic cooperation between Brunei, Sabah, and Sarawak as a catalyst for shared prosperity and regional integration.
