20 left homeless as fire razes workers’ quarters, vehicles

MUKAH: Twenty individuals, including children, were left with nothing but clothes on their backs after a fire destroyed their eight-door workers’ quarters at Himma Shipping Sdn Bhd, Kampung Bedangan Hulu here this morning.

The blaze also damaged a Perodua Kancil by 20 per cent and completely gutted a motorcycle.

Fortunately, no injuries or casualties were reported in the 10:13 am incident as the occupants managed to evacuate to safety.

It was reported that two of the doors were vacant while six were occupied by 20 individuals, including children.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said firefighters from Mukah station were dispatched to the scene, about seven kilometres away, following an emergency call.

Upon arrival, the team confirmed that the non-permanent structure, measuring 108 feet by 24 feet, was beyond saving and performed the extinguishing deed using water sourced from a nearby fire hydrant.

The flames were brought under control at 11:00 am, followed by overhaul works to ensure no potential reignition.

Once the situation was deemed safe, the team ended the operation at 11:25 am.

The cause of the fire and losses incurred are still under investigation.
