KAPIT: Students here will have a RM100 million new secondary school with the construction of Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Bukit Goram, which is expected to be completed by 2030.
Approved under the 12th Malaysia Plan (Rolling Plan 5), the project is scheduled to commence around 2026 or 2027 and will take three years to complete.
Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development Datuk Dr Annuar Rapaee, accompanied by Deputy Minister in the Sarawak Premier’s Department (Law and Native Affairs) and Bukit Goram assemblyman Datuk Jefferson Jamit Unyat, conducted a site visit to the proposed school location recently.
The development scope includes an administration block, an academic block with 36 classrooms, a Special Education Integrated Programme (PPKI) block with five classrooms, a canteen, a school hall, and other essential facilities and furnishings.
Dr Annuar said the new school is not only about increasing the number of schools in Kapit but also about providing a more conducive learning environment for students while Jefferson described the project as a testament to the government’s commitment to strengthening rural education infrastructure in line with Sarawak’s Post Covid-19 Development Strategy (PCDS 2030).
Later, both deputy ministers also inspected the repair works at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Kampong Baru, which was previously classified as a “sick project.”
The school building is expected to be handed over to the Sarawak Education Department by mid-December, enabling SK Kampong Baru to reopen for the January 2026 school session.
Pupils and teachers of SK Kampong Baru have been temporarily relocated to SK Kapit for the past six years to continue their teaching and learning activities.
