BERLIN: Sarawak is looking to tap into Siemens Energy’s cutting-edge technology as part of efforts to accelerate its hydrogen agenda and cement its leadership in green energy.
Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the working visit to Siemens Energy’s headquarters opened new opportunities for Sarawak to leverage advanced technologies, particularly in hydrogen production.
He highlighted Siemens’ electrolyser technology capability of producing 350kg of hydrogen per hour, compared to Sarawak’s current capacity of around 130kg per day.
“This capability presents an opportunity for Sarawak to increase both efficiency and production capacity in the future.
“We have discussed with the company, and Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), together with the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication, will study possible areas of collaboration in this process.
“This means we may learn from them and see how things progress in the future,” he said when speaking to reporters on Monday (Sept 8).
Abang Johari added that apart from electrolyser technology, Sarawak is also keen to explore cooperation in gas turbines and research development through Siemens’ Innovation Centre, which offers simulation facilities.
He noted that Siemens’ gas turbine technology could be applied in Samalaju, including potential upgrades over time.
“The simulation facilities at the Innovation Center also have potential to be utilised by users in Sarawak,” he said.
The Premier stressed that the official working visit was highly meaningful as it opened new avenues of cooperation in green energy, in line with Sarawak’s aspiration to become a regional leader in the hydrogen industry.
Earlier, Abang Johari and his delegation met with Siemens Energy senior vice president and managing director for Asia Pacific Thorbjörn Fors, and executive vice president for Global Functions Juha Pankakoski.
Accompanying the Premier were Minister of Utility and Telecommunication Datuk Seri Julaihi Narawi, Deputy Minister of Utility (Sarawak Energy and Petros) Datuk Ibrahim Baki, and SEB group chief executive officer Datuk Sharbini Suhaili.
