KUCHING: Sarawak will showcase and honour its finest talents in theatre, dance and music when the Sarawak Arts Award 2025 is staged on October 22 in the Banquet Hall of the Sarawak State Legislative Assembly (DUN).

The biennial celebration is recognised as the state’s highest platform of recognition for contributions to arts, culture, heritage and the creative industry.

Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts (MTCP), Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said the award reflects Sarawak’s deep respect for its cultural heritage and its artists.

“This prestigious award proves that Sarawak’s arts and culture remain strong and cherished in the hearts of all its people, regardless of ethnicity or background,” he said at a press conference today.

The award, organised in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC) and the National Department for Culture and Arts (JKKN), focuses on three key disciplines: theatre, dance and music.

“While the arts are vast and varied, we have chosen to highlight these core areas where Sarawak continues to excel nationally and internationally,” Abdul Karim said.

Nominations for the award were open from June 1 to July 1, 2025, with 92 entries received and evaluated in a transparent manner.

The categories include the Sarawak Arts Luminary Award (Tokoh Seni Sarawak 2025), Arts Media Supporter Award, Government and Corporate Arts Supporter Award, NGO Arts Supporter Award, Kenyalang Opera Theatre Award, Sri Ritma Kenyalang Music Award, Kesuma Kenyalang Dance Award, and a Lifetime Achievement Award for veteran artists.

“We are proud that the judging panel comprises respected figures who have long contributed to Sarawak’s cultural landscape, ensuring a fair and credible selection process,” he added.

The choice of the State Legislative Assembly building as the venue underscores the award’s high standing.

“This iconic venue signifies the importance we place on the arts as a pillar of Sarawak’s identity and pride,” Abdul Karim said.

Since its launch in 2015, the Sarawak Arts Award has honoured prominent cultural figures.

“Through this platform, our artists are recognised not only at home but also on the world stage.

“It is our hope that the Sarawak Arts Award will continue to inspire new generations of creative talent,” Abdul Karim concluded.

However, the award will continue to be held every two years, ensuring ample time for artistic achievements to mature and new talents to emerge.
