Rider killed, pillion severely injured in late-night crash

KUCHING: A late-night crash along Jalan Green on Monday (Sept 22) claimed the life of a 22-year-old motorcyclist, leaving his pillion rider critically injured in a two-vehicle collision.

The fatal crash occurred at around 1.05 am when a Perodua Alza, heading towards the city’s Waterfront from Jalan Stapok, lost control and swerved into the opposite lane before slamming into the Yamaha Lagenda motorcycle.

Paramedics confirmed the rider dead at the scene and his remains were taken to Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) for further action.

Meanwhile, his 21-year-old female pillion suffered serious injuries and was rushed to the same hospital for immediate treatment.

Kuching police chief ACP Alexson Naga Chabu said the Alza driver, a 22-year-old woman, has been detained to facilitate investigations under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.

The offence pertains to causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, and it carries a penalty of up to 10 years’ imprisonment, a fine of up to RM50,000, and a driving licence disqualification of up to 10 years, upon conviction.

Alexson urged those with information on the accident, to contact investigating officer Insp Saundri Govinda Rajoo at 011-27549620, 082-259900, or the nearest police station.

“Motorists are reminded to exercise caution and obey traffic rules at all times to safeguard their own lives and those of others,” he said
