SIBU: A 42-year-old local man was arrested by police on Wednesday in a raid at a house in Jalan Pasai Siong here on suspicion of engaging in drug activity.
In the incident at about 10:05 am, a police team from the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Division, Sibu District Police Headquarters (IPD), conducted an inspection at the premises before arresting the suspect.
According to Sibu District Police Chief, ACP Zulkipli Suhaili, the inspection found a transparent plastic packet containing crystal chunks suspected to be methamphetamine with an estimated gross weight of 5.58 grammes.
“The value of the seized drugs is estimated at RM500. The urine test conducted also found the suspect positive for amphetamine and methamphetamine,” he said in a media statement today.
Further checks also revealed that the suspect has a past record related to drug offences.
Following that, the suspect was arrested under Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and Section 15(1)(a) of the same act, and is now remanded to assist in further investigations.
Upon conviction under Section 39A(1), the suspect can be sentenced to imprisonment for not less than two years and three strokes of the cane.
Meanwhile, for an offence under Section 15(1)(a), the offender can be fined not more than RM5,000 or imprisoned for not more than two years or both, and placed under supervision for two years in accordance with Section 38B of the same act.
Zulkipli stressed that the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), particularly the Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department (JSJN), will continue to intensify efforts to combat drug trafficking and abuse in this district.
“The public who have any information related to drug activities are urged to come forward to assist the police by channelling information through the JSJN Hotline at 012-2087222,” he said.
