KOTA SAMARAHAN: SMK Sri Samarahan is expected to receive around 2,000 new students when the school opens in June next year.
Kota Samarahan Member of Parliament, Datuk Rubiah Wang, said the figure takes into account the current excess student capacity at SMK Kota Samarahan and SMK Muara Tuang.
She said this will ensure that students from the Kota Samarahan area can pursue their education in a more comfortable environment without being left behind.
“The initial target for the first intake at SMK Sri Samarahan is estimated to be around 2,000 students, with a portion coming from SMK Kota Samarahan and SMK Muara Tuang, considering the proximity of the surrounding areas.
“This will also make it easier for us to liaise with parents since SMK Sri Samarahan is located in a new area,” she said.
She was speaking to reporters after officiating at the closing of the Sarawak Education Innovation Convention 2025 at The Summer Shopping Mall here today.
The Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister then explained that the first phase of the intake will involve Form One to Form Three students, followed by a second phase for Form Four and Form Five students.
“Insya-Allah, we expect this will provide a better learning environment for students in Kota Samarahan,” she added.
SMK Sri Samarahan was built to address overcrowding issues faced by SMK Muara Tuang and SMK Kota Samarahan.
Construction began in 2022 following the approval of the RM53.7 million project in 2018. The school will feature 47 classrooms.
For the record, the Public Works Department (PWD) Samarahan Division is overseeing the project, with the purpose to solve the problem of overcrowding of students in the area.
It is expected to accommodate students from the Desa Ilmu area and nearby villages, covering Kampung Meranek up to Kampung Mata Parang.
