KUCHING: Sarawak police are on standby to provide full security support for the upcoming 17th Sabah state election.
Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the contingent is closely monitoring developments in Sabah and is ready to assist in ensuring a smooth election process, including campaigning and polling.
“As the contingent closest to Sabah, it is natural and our responsibility to provide manpower support whenever required,” he said.
He said this to reporters during a doorstep interview after attending the Sarawak Contingent Police monthly assembly at the state police headquarters here this morning.
Mohamad Zainal addd the number of personnel to be deployed has not yet been decided and will depend on the needs and requests of the Sabah authorities.
The Sabah State Legislative Assembly (DUN) was dissolved on Oct 6, paving the way for its 17th state election, expected to be held within 60 days as stipulated under the State Constitution.
On Oct 6, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor announced the dissolution in a press conference after a gathering with Sabah government state assemblymen at Menara Kinabalu.
Meanwhile, Election Commission (EC) secretary Datuk Khairul Shahril Idrus in a statement said the EC will hold a special meeting on Oct 16 to discuss key dates and other matters related to the Sabah polls.
