KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg conveyed deep appreciation to the Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, for his lifelong sacrifices and service in defending Sarawak’s rights and sovereignty.

He said Wan Junaidi had ensured that Sarawak continued to be respected within Malaysia while maintaining its distinct status and entitlements.

He noted that Wan Junaidi, ‘anak Sarawak’, had made invaluable contributions since his early involvement in the security forces, playing a key role in safeguarding the state.

“In this era, Tun has once again taken a leading role in championing Sarawak Ibu Pertiwi, particularly in defending Sarawak’s position as a partner in the formation of Malaysia as enshrined in the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63),” he said.

He said this in his address during the parade held in conjunction with the 79th official birthday of the Head of State, Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, at Padang Merdeka here today.

Abang Johari said the annual celebration of the Head of State’s official birthday served as recognition of the significant role of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri as a symbol of unity, stability and sovereignty in Sarawak.

He stressed that the position of the Head of State also reflected the determination of Sarawakians to uphold the dignity and sovereignty of the state within Malaysia’s federal system.

“All Sarawakians, regardless of race, religion or political belief, must uphold the role of the Yang di-Pertua Negeri as a unifying force, because this has always been the foundation of Sarawak’s development and harmony,” he said.

Abang Johari reminded that the achievements enjoyed by Sarawak today were not easily attained, but were the result of the unity and hard work of its people in driving the State’s vision of progress.

“Let us continue to strengthen our unity and determination to build a future for Sarawak that is more prosperous, resilient and sovereign,” he added.
