MIRI: More patients battling terminal illness from Miri to Lawas will soon gain access to care as Samling Group renews its long-running support for the Palliative Care Association of Miri (PCAM).

The company’s latest contribution, presented at Wisma Samling’s Board Room, will fund PCAM’s plans to establish a dedicated Palliative Centre and strengthen outreach to remote districts including Limbang and Lawas.

Samling Group chief operating officer Yap Fui Fook handed the sponsorship to PCAM vice president Jacqueline Buri during a cheque presentation ceremony attended by representatives from both organisations.

Yap said the partnership reflects Samling’s commitment to upholding dignity and compassion within the communities it serves.

“We uphold the dignity of every individual, and the efforts of PCAM to deliver compassionate, comprehensive care are indispensable to our community.

“This collaboration shows our commitment to making a positive impact in the areas that need it most,” he said.

For the record, since 2017, Samling has contributed more than RM65,000 to PCAM, supporting initiatives ranging from infrastructure improvements to community events such as the Charity Run for Love.

PCAM, a non-profit association, provides essential care to patients with life-limiting illnesses through its home visit and day-care programmes.

Its palliative nurses travel up to 50 kilometres from Miri to offer medical guidance, nursing care and emotional support.

New cases are typically assessed within a week, with regular follow-ups every two weeks alongside doctors from Miri Hospital.

The association also runs a Thursday morning day-care session where patients can take part in massage therapy, games and social activities designed to improve emotional wellbeing.

Its medical equipment loan service provides oxygen concentrators and specialised mattresses to ease the strain on families and reduce unnecessary hospital visits.

Buri said Samling’s consistent support has been crucial to PCAM’s ability to serve more communities.

“This substantial and ongoing support from Samling is crucial in enabling us to assist more patients and families in need.

“The funds will directly facilitate the expansion of our outreach programmes and the development of essential infrastructure, ensuring that high-quality palliative care is accessible even in the most remote areas of Sarawak,” she said.

Furthermore, she shared that over the years, PCAM has extended its reach from Miri to Batu Niah, Bekenu, Baram and further north to Limbang and Lawas.

“With a newly obtained licence to operate a hospice centre, we are preparing to strengthen its facilities to meet growing demand for specialised care.”
