Borneo Jazz Festival showcases Miri’s rise as global cultural hub

MIRI: Miri raised its profile as an emerging cultural destination on Friday with the opening of the 19th Borneo Jazz Festival, drawing a vibrant crowd and signalling renewed momentum in Sarawak’s creative tourism sector.

The launch at Eastwood Valley Golf and Country Club was officiated by Mayor Adam Yii Siew Sang, in the presence of Datuk Gerawat Gala, Deputy Minister in the Premier’s Department (Labour, Immigration and Project Monitoring), and Datuk Dennis Ngau, the Sarawak Tourism Board’s chairman.

Yii said the festival continues to serve as a strategic cultural and economic platform for the region.

“This festival has placed Miri firmly on the international stage. It shows who we are: a city that is creative, outward-looking, and ready to welcome the world,” he said.

More than 10,000 people are expected to attend the three-day festival.

Yii emphasised that music tourism remains a key economic catalyst for Miri, supporting hospitality, transportation, local businesses, and the creative workforce.

Day 1 (Friday, October 31) delivered an energetic and diverse showcase, featuring performances by Aina Abdul (Malaysia), Tabitha King (United States), Amsyar Leee (Malaysia), Nonaria (Indonesia), Ruiwen Yang x Kim Kwang Yong Trio (China & Korea), Pop N’ Bop (Malaysia), The Echoes (Malaysia), Sada Borneo (Malaysia), and Dion Das (Malaysia).

Tabitha King’s set drew particular applause, with the crowd responding to her powerful vocals and charismatic stage presence, setting a high bar for the weekend.

The atmosphere was lively, communal and upbeat, reflecting the strong audience connection the festival has long cultivated.

Schedule to perform on Day 2 (Saturday, November 1) are Aisha Retno (Malaysia), Jaz Hayat (Brunei), On The Rug (Korea), Aruel & The Fasola (Malaysia), Ruiwen Yang x Kim Kwang Yong Trio (China & Korea), The Shang Sisters (Malaysia), Sada Borneo (Malaysia) and Dion Das (Malaysia) .

Both nights are hosted by Kim Goodburn, Mister International 2023, and Melisha Lin, Miss Grand International 2024’s 5th Runner-Up, adding glamour and audience engagement to the festival atmosphere.

Yii also confirmed that the 2026 edition will take place from 23 to 25 October.

He ended with an invitation for visitors to immerse themselves in the city.

“Experience Miri. Our culture, our people, our landscape. Let this festival be your starting point,” he said.

The festival runs until Sunday.

The crowd broke into a spontaneous poco-poco, with hosts Kim Goodburn and Melisha Lin joining in, turning the festival ground into one big dance floor.
