SAMARAHAN: Head of State and Chancellor of  Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Tun Pehin Sri Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar, has reminded graduating students that education does not end with a degree.

Speaking at the university’s 29th Convocation ceremony on Monday, he said it is instead a lifelong journey to keep learning, renewing knowledge and adapting to a world that is always changing.

“Only through knowledge practised with discipline and compassion can one become a person of virtue, vision and value,” he said during the first session of the ceremony held at the Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra (DeTAR).

“Use the knowledge you have gained to improve lives and benefit others.

“When knowledge is used responsibly, success becomes meaningful not only to oneself but also to the state and the nation,” he said.

In this context he told them that the degrees they have attained are not merely symbols of personal success, but also a trust that carries responsibility to serve their families, communities and their beloved homeland.

“True civilisation is built not upon natural wealth, but upon honesty, strong values, and the courage to uphold truth and justice,” he said.

Wan Junaidi also praised UNIMAS for strengthening its position as a Community-Driven University for a Sustainable Future, through initiatives that empower rural communities, promote digital innovation, and preserve cultural and environmental heritage.

While highlighting new milestones, he cited the establishment of the Faculty of Law and the Research Chair on Sarawak History as major steps forward in supporting the state’s legal and historical scholarship.

“The Faculty of Law is a significant stride in nurturing legal professionals who understand both the technical and human dimensions of justice.

“Meanwhile, the Research Chair on Sarawak History will ensure that our heritage, culture, and struggles continue to be cherished and studied by future generations,” he said.

In conclusion, he expressed his appreciation to the university’s leadership, lecturers, and staff for their unwavering dedication, and to the families whose support and sacrifices paved the way for the graduates’ success.

“The strength of an institution lies in the spirit of its people who serve with integrity and dedication.

“May the graduates of today continue to walk with courage, humility, and sincerity in service to Sarawak and the nation,” he said.
