SIBU: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has found that the quality of mobile networks around Sibu town is at a good and stable level, based on a recent coverage test.
According to a statement by MCMC today (Nov 7), the assessment was carried out following complaints from the public regarding the quality of mobile communication services in the area, which were also raised by Sibu MP Oscar Ling Chai Yew during the recent Parliament session.
Coverage tests were carried out in several focus locations, including Jalan Pulau, Jalan Merdeka and the Sungai Bidut area, with results showing that download and upload rates were at a satisfactory level for all major service providers.
Investigations also found that a temporary disruption to network quality on Nov 1 was caused by a long-term power outage at one of the main telecommunications towers in the Sri Aman area, which affected connections between towers in central to northern Sarawak, including Sibu.
Network services were restored in stages from 10am to 5pm the same day.
Throughout this year, MCMC has carried out 61 network audits in the Sibu district and issued 16 improvement notices to service providers who did not meet performance standards, as part of its ongoing commitment to ensuring that the quality and reliability of communications services remain at optimal levels.
