KUCHING: Healthcare assistants (PPK) are being recognised as unsung heroes in shaping the future of healthcare as their responsibilities grow with the demands of Malaysia’s health system.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian said the 2007 redesignation from attendant to Pembantu Perawatan Kesihatan (PPK) marked more than a change in title, reflecting the wider scope of duties now carried by the group.

“Over the years, the role of PPK has also expanded, involving assistance in the management of simple medical equipment, taking and recording patient data, and assisting other health workers such as nurses and doctors.

“Their contributions span across curative, preventive, promotive, and rehabilitative services,” he said.

He said this in his speech read out by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman Tan Kai during the Sarawak General Hospital (SGH) Sarawak Assistant Medical Officers Association (SAMOA) dinner at a hotel here, last night (Nov 14).

He added that recognising PPK’s role, the Ministry of Health declared Nov 1 as Hari Pembantu Perawatan Kesihatan beginning in 2022, to acknowledge the significance of their role in safeguarding the health of our people.

“This recognition is well deserved. This evening is not just a celebration. It is a reminder that our healthcare system relies on teamwork, compassion, and commitment. PPKs’ are often the first to assist a patient and the last to leave their side.

“The dedication you show, whether in wards, emergency units, health clinics, or community outreach, reflects the heart of healthcare itself: care, patience, and humanity” he said.

Dr Sim said as Sarawak continues to advance its healthcare infrastructure and services, the career pathway of PPKs has also evolved, with clearer structures for training, professional development, and career advancement.

“I encourage each of you to continue growing your knowledge, your skills, and your confidence. Your profession is meaningful. Your service is respected. Your role is essential.

“Equally essential as nurses, medical assistants and doctors. You are the ones who keep the system moving. You are our steady hands and compassionate presence. You are, in many ways, our unsung heroes in shaping the future of healthcare,” he said.
