SARAWAK has set aside RM6 million next year for site verification, feasibility studies and an integrated masterplan for the proposed new Kuching international airport.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the study would shape the long-term direction of Sarawak’s aviation infrastructure as the state strengthened its regional air links.

“We will strengthen Sarawak’s aviation links, supporting both passenger and freight movement, and open new pathways for tourism, trade, and regional collaboration,” he said when tabling the 2026 State Budget.

Abang Johari said RM51 million would also be provided for Bebuling airport, alongside RM1 million for a study on international air connectivity into Sarawak.

For the port sector, Abang Johari said RM118.1 million has been set aside to support the state’s expanding trade, logistics needs and regional integration.

He said the investments are part of efforts to build a resilient and future-ready port system that improved economic access across all regions of Sarawak.

“Key components under this initiative include port infrastructure, navigational safety enhancements, riverine infrastructure development and digital port operations,” he added.

The allocation would fund projects such as the Vessel Tracking Management System and navigational aids for Sungai Miri and Kuala Baram, and the relocation of the Tanjung Kidurong Lighthouse to Tanjung Likau in Bintulu.

Other components include the development of a vehicle yard and associated facilities at Senari Port, port development and maintenance dredging grants for state port authorities, a masterplan study for ports, and the construction of wharves, jetties, river walls and waterfront infrastructure.
