THE proposed Sustainable Resources and Waste Management Bill 2025 is set to transform Sarawak’s economy by promoting green and circular practices that not only enhance economic stability but also generate high-value employment opportunities.

Tupong assemblyman Datuk Fazzrudin Abdul Rahman said developing a sustainable materials ecosystem could create jobs in sectors such as recycling and resource recovery, sustainable product design, green logistics, biomaterial engineering, and circular manufacturing.

Drawing on international examples, he noted that countries like Germany and South Korea have successfully leveraged circular economy strategies to create a wide range of employment in waste technology, urban sustainability, and resource recovery.

“Sustainability is not a threat to jobs, it is a driver of high-value employment.”

Fazzrudin said this in supporting the Sustainable Resources and Wastes Management Bill during the DUN sitting today.

“It is crucial to learn from these success stories. While technology may replace some jobs, it also generates new, higher-paying opportunities. Sarawak can adopt these lessons to build a thriving green economy.”

He also stressed the role of a circular economy in strengthening long-term national resilience.

“By keeping resources in domestic circulation, the circular economy mitigates risks associated with supply chain disruptions, resource shortages, and global price volatility.

“The Bill equips authorities with oversight powers for segregation, collection, transportation, treatment, and recycling of sustainable resources, ensuring a more resilient and sustainable economic future for Sarawak.”
