THE Native Courts of Sarawak will work closely with the Administrative Unit to ensure every new district office building includes a dedicated Native Courtroom, reflecting careful and forward-looking planning.

Minister in the Premier’s Department Datuk Seri John Sikie Tayai said that it is essential for traditional institutions to evolve in tandem with the socio-economic development of Sarawak to meet the needs of present and future generations.

He said the state government is currently constructing new district office buildings across various districts, demonstrating a strong commitment to providing modern, functional and accessible public service facilities for the benefit of the rakyat.

“The inclusion of Native Courtrooms within these buildings will ensure that justice is administered in a dignified, orderly and professional environment,” he said when delivering his ministerial winding-up speech today (Dec 1).

To further strengthen the system, the design, furnishings and equipment of these courtrooms will be standardised throughout the state.

Such uniformity, he noted, will enhance operational efficiency while safeguarding the integrity and stature of the Native Courts System in Sarawak.

According to him, distinctive local motifs and designs representing the diverse native communities of Sarawak will also be incorporated into each courtroom.

These cultural elements will enrich the identity of the courtrooms and reflect the traditions, values and histories that guide the Native Courts in carrying out justice. At the same time, the state is ensuring that these courtrooms are equipped with infrastructure to support digital technology in future proceedings.

“This includes facilities for electronic documentation, virtual hearings and improved digital case management, all of which aim to strengthen efficiency, accessibility and transparency in the Native Courts’ judicial processes,” he said.
