SIBU: The Sarawak United Peoples’ Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch team conducted an inspection from the Bawang Assan Sg. Lebaan Bridge area to the vicinity of SK Bawang Assan on Wednesday, where the newly installed streetlights have been completed.
The team also carried out an on-site assessment with relevant agencies to identify additional locations for future streetlight installation along this route.
Branch chairman, Councillor Kevin Lau Kor Jie, along with engineers from the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), a team from Sarawak Energy Berhad (SESCO), and the appointed contractor, oversaw the final placement of the new streetlights near SK Bawang Assan to ensure all installation requirements were met.
Lau said the installation works are funded under the Rural Development and Transformation Programme (RTP), a special allocation approved by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.
He explained that several factors – including existing infrastructure, power connectivity and overall safety – must be taken into consideration when determining suitable installation points.
“Today’s site visit focuses on final discussions with the contractor and SESCO engineers to ensure that every proposed streetlight location provides optimal lighting and meets the actual needs of road users,” he said.
He believed that once the new streetlights are fully installed, night-time visibility along the route will significantly improve.
This, he stressed, will not only enhance road safety for drivers and pedestrians, but also create a safer environment for students commuting to and from the nearby school during early morning and late afternoon hours.
