KUCHING: The Sarawak Economic Development Corporation (SEDC) is set to be a key driver of Sarawak’s economic transformation as the state advances towards its 2030 development goals.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg highlighted SEDC’s contributions during the corporation’s 53rd anniversary corporate dinner here last night (Dec 5), noting its pivotal role in promoting industrialisation and developing critical infrastructure.

“While other organisations were still adjusting, SEDC remained proactive, implementing innovation-driven transformation without neglecting its responsibilities to the people and the state,” he said, describing the corporation as a strategic partner in Sarawak’s development agenda.

He urged SEDC to continue investing in ventures that create jobs, develop skills, and benefit communities in both urban and rural areas.

“Through these efforts, value is created for all Sarawakians, ensuring development benefits reach every corner of the state,” he added.

Looking ahead, Abang Johari encouraged SEDC to pioneer new economic activities to generate state revenue and uplift living standards by aligning human capital with natural resources to make Sarawak a competitive regional economy.

He highlighted SEDC’s potential in renewable energy, including hydrogen production, hybrid gas-biomass power, and solar energy, and suggested exploring algae-based fuel for aviation in line with the upcoming launch of Sarawak’s airline, AirBorneo.

“I think I rely on SEDC to produce another type of fuel, which is algae. SEDC can produce algae, and together with our partners, I hope this algae will become a fuel for aviation,’’ he said.

On infrastructure and tourism, he highlighted plans to widen the road to Damai to four lanes and upgrade routes from Miri to Mulu to enhance connectivity, attract tourists, and open up rural economies.

He also encouraged improving hospitality services in Damai, including golf facilities, and highlighted the DeepSAR initiative, which aims to support language translation, biodiversity awareness, and e-commerce connectivity.

On sustainability, Abang Johari urged SEDC to leverage Sarawak’s new waste-management law to create products from plastic waste, turning it into aggregates that can be mixed with bitumen to resurface roads.

“With determination, innovation, and strategic planning, SEDC will achieve even greater results in the years to come,” he said, expressing confidence in the corporation’s ability to meet future challenges and lead Sarawak into a new era of economic growth.
