SIBU: Six Village Development and Security Committees (JKKKs) here participated in a ‘Rajang River Night Cruise’ held recently, bringing together community leaders and committee members to strengthen ties and showcase unity and cooperation among grassroots organisations.

The six JKKKs were Bukit Igu as the lead organiser together with Sg. Sadit Kiri, Sg. Sadit Kanan, Jalan Quarry, Bandar Sibu and Sg. Dasin Ensurai.

Officiating at the event, Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Chairman, Cr Kevin Lau, expressed his satisfaction at seeing continued mutual support among community leaders in organising activities and managing community affairs, noting that such a spirit must be upheld over the long term to further strengthen public trust and confidence in the service team.

He reaffirmed that his team will remain focused on addressing issues faced by local communities and will continue working hand in hand with all JKKKs to build a safer, more progressive and brighter future for Bawang Assan.

He said during the multiple flood incidents that affected the Bawang Assan area earlier this year, the Kapitan and Penghulu from the various localities worked closely with his team to assist affected residents.

He noted that the community leaders actively helped to apply for financial assistance and food aid from the Sarawak Disaster Management Committee and the Social Welfare Department, and personally delivered the assistance door-to-door to affected households, clearly demonstrating the sense of responsibility and commitment shown by grassroots leaders.

“Infrastructure achievements in the Bawang Assan area, including road upgrading works, drainage system improvements and street lighting installations, were not the result of any single individual’s efforts, but rather the outcome of strong support and cooperation from community leaders and the respective JKKKs.

“Serving as an important bridge between the government and the people, these leaders have maintained close collaboration with relevant agencies to jointly promote local development,” Lau, who is also SUPP Youth Central Chief, added.
