KUCHING: Sarawak’s recent recognition by the Guinness World Records (GWR) marks a strategic boost in positioning the state as a top destination on the global tourism map.
Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah said the achievement reflects Sarawak’s commitment to innovative approaches in promoting the tourism sector ahead of Visit Malaysia Year (VMY) 2026.
“By securing a globally recognised record, Sarawak strengthens its international visibility and reinforces its image as a progressive, creative, and confident state on the world stage,” he said in TVS news report recently.
The ‘Gateway to Sarawak’ project, recognised for the ‘Longest GPS Journey by Drone Relay’, is expected to significantly enhance the state’s tourism storytelling through digital and visual platforms.
“This achievement produces high-impact content that can be leveraged across broadcast, digital, social media, and international marketing campaigns. It also brings Sarawak’s tourism and stories to the world stage,” he added.
Abdul Karim noted that the historic recognition instils pride among Sarawakians.
“When locals see their state gain global recognition, it fosters a sense of ownership and support for tourism—key to maintaining momentum and ensuring long-term success beyond VMY 2026,” he said.
Media reports stated that GWR will officially announce the ‘Gateway to Sarawak Guinness World Record’ during the Countdown 2026 event at Kuching Waterfront tonight. The announcement is expected to be one of the event’s highlight moments.
