Flood and landslide evacuations increasing rapidly

KUCHING: Over 1,140 people have been forced to seek shelter across Sarawak due to floods and landslides.

As of Friday (Jan. 2), the Sarawak State Civil Defence Force (APM) confirmed that 10 temporary relief centres (PPS) are currently in operations, including one newly opened in Lawas.

In Kuching, floods have displaced 1,095 people, who are currently housed in Stapok Community Hall, Piang Hall in Kampung Sinar Budi Baru, Surau Ar-Rahman in Kg Sungai Batu, Surau Nurul Najhin Hall, Taman Malihah Multipurpose Hall, SJK Sungai Tengah, and SJK Chung Hua Batu Kawa.

In Samarahan, 25 flood victims are taking refuge at Kota Samarahan Civic Hall, while 16 people in Lawas are sheltered at the newly activated Trusan Community Hall.

Meanwhile, in Miri, four people displaced by a landslide are being assisted at the Red Crescent Hall.

APM confirmed that the trend of evacuations is increasing and urged residents in flood- and landslide-prone areas to remain alert and follow official safety advisories.
