KUCHING: Sarawakians, particularly the younger generation, must continuously equip themselves with the latest knowledge to remain relevant in a rapidly changing world.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said knowledge that is relevant to the times is essential for progress and the pace of change meant that learning should not stop after formal education.

He urged Sarawak youths to continue reading and updating their knowledge even after graduating.

“Change is constant and will continue to accelerate with advancements in technology. To move forward, we must have knowledge that is relevant to our time and that is why you must read books, read widely and keep up with the latest knowledge.

“The learning environment has evolved dramatically since my school days. Today, if you want to answer a question, you go to Google or ChatGPT,” he said.

He said this during the townhall session with the Premier on Tuesday night (Jan 13) at the Hikmah Exchange Event and Convention Centre.

Abang Johari recalled that computers were once large mainframes occupying entire rooms, compared to today where technology fits into the palm of one’s hand, with artificial intelligence (AI) now shaping how information is accessed and processed.

He cautioned against over-reliance on technology, stressing that while digital tools can accelerate solutions, critical thinking must still come from the human mind.

“You can’t depend on technology alone. Technology is there to help you accelerate solutions, but it must come from you,” he said.

Abang Johari also said technology could be used positively or negatively depending on how it was applied.

“Some people use AI for slander. That is why my answer is simple — equip yourself with the latest knowledge, understand its impact, and use it for positive change,” he said.

Abang Johari expressed confidence that Sarawak is moving in the right direction, driven by knowledge-based development and responsible use of technology.

“Alhamdulillah, Sarawak is heading that way, and hopefully Sarawak will continue to progress as a developed state,” he said.
