KUCHING: Sarawak nearly reached its five-million visitor target in 2025, posting tourism receipts of RM12.6 billion and demonstrating strong growth in the state’s tourism industry.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah revealed that visitor arrivals for the year totaled 4,971,197 — just shy of the target by over 28,800 visitors, yet still representing the highest number Sarawak has ever recorded.

“We almost hit the five million. I was praying whether we can hit it. The number that came in until the Dec 31, was 4.971 million,” he told reporters after the SBA–Yonex-Sunrise signing ceremony.

Abdul Karim explained that the tourism industry is thriving and benefiting many sectors including hotels, restaurants, and lodging establishments such as bed and breakfasts.

He was optimistc that Sarawak would surpass the elusive five-million visitor milestone in 2026.

“We have been aiming for this target for three years now and are getting closer. I am very confident that in 2026, we will be able to hit past the five-million target,” he said, noting that the state is still finalising its visitor target for the upcoming year.

Highlighting key source markets, Abdul Karim said Brunei Darussalam remains the largest contributor to visitor arrivals, with hundreds of thousands traveling weekly. Indonesia also shows promising growth, supported by good connectivity by air and road.

Sarawak’s strong tourism performance has positively impacted local economies, particularly in towns like Miri, which continue to thrive with sustained visitor interest.

He also outlined ongoing efforts to upgrade tourism facilities ahead of major upcoming events, ensuring Sarawak remains competitive as a regional tourism hub.
