MIRI: A 60-foot fishing vessel was destroyed in a fire at the waterfront here on Thursday evening (July 30), with firefighters preventing the blaze from spreading to nearby boats and facilities.
The Sarawak Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) said it received an emergency call at 5:30 pm reporting a vessel ablaze behind Italy Furniture Trading.
Firefighters from the Miri Sentral Fire and Rescue Station arrived within 12 minutes to find the 60-foot fishing vessel fully engulfed in flames.
Despite the rapid response, the fire had already consumed the vessel, leaving it 100 per cent destroyed.
Eight firefighters, assisted by a Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and an Emergency Medical Rescue Services (EMRS) vehicle, mounted an intensive firefighting operation to contain the blaze and prevent it from spreading to nearby boats and waterfront facilities.
The operations were led by PBK II Jukernain Jon.
No injuries or fatalities were reported.
Firefighters were still battling the blaze at the time of the latest update.
The cause of the fire remains unknown and will be investigated once the scene has been declared safe.
