MIRI: A 42-year-old man was fined RM3,000 by the Magistrates’ Court here after pleading guilty to engaging in online gambling.

The court ordered the accused to serve four months’ imprisonment in default of payment. He was charged under Section 7(2) of the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953.

The offence was committed at about 1:45 pm on July 28 at a telecommunications outlet in Taman Jelita.

The man was arrested during an ‘Ops Dadu Khas’ raid carried out by officers and personnel from the Criminal Investigation Division of the Miri District Police Headquarters (IPD Miri).

Investigations found that the suspect was allegedly conducting online gambling activities using his mobile phone.

Police also seized a Realme C11 mobile phone and RM144 in cash believed to be linked to the illegal gambling activity.

Miri police said enforcement against illegal gambling, including online gambling, would continue to be intensified through regular operations and targeted raids.

Members of the public have also been reminded to refrain from participating in any form of illegal gambling, whether conducted physically or online, as firm action will be taken against those found to be breaching the law.

Anyone with information on illegal gambling activities is urged to contact the Miri District Police Headquarters or the nearest police station.
