KUCHING: More than 1,200 participants have turned up for the Women Empowerment Run 2026 at the MBKS Foyer here this morning (Jan 18).
The community event was organised by the Pan Pacific and South East Asia Women’s Association (PPSEAWA) Sarawak Chapter and brought together women, families and community supporters in a show of unity and empowerment.
Representing Minister of Women, Family and Community Development Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, the run was officiated by Department of Women Development deputy director general Dr Faridah Awang.

The fun run focused on participation rather than competition, with 3km and 5km routes designed to be inclusive for people of all ages and fitness levels.
In her officiating address, Dr Faridah said the run carried a clear message that empowerment belongs to everyone, including families, first-time runners, senior citizens and allies who believe that when women progress, communities grow stronger together.
“Every step taken today is a statement that women deserve safe spaces, healthy lives and equal opportunities to thrive,” she said, adding that women empowerment begins with access to health, support, knowledge and safe, welcoming spaces.
She noted that initiatives such as the Women Empowerment Run extend beyond a single-day event, creating lasting impact through follow-up efforts including wellness screenings, mentorship opportunities, skills development pathways and community partnerships.
The programme began with an energetic Aerodance warm-up session before the flag-off, with participants supported by hydration points along the route and welcomed by a lively finish-line village that reflected the event’s people-first approach.
PPSEAWA Sarawak Chapter chairperson Datuk Dr Munirah said the Women Empowerment Run was more than a recreational activity, describing it as a platform that creates access to health, safe spaces and supportive networks.
“The strong participation from government agencies and non-governmental organisations today reflects a collective commitment to inclusion, wellbeing and opportunity for women and girls,” she said.
