Fire in workers’ quarters kills two in Kuala Baram

MIRI: Two plantation workers were killed after an early-morning fire tore through a wooden workers’ quarters at an estate in Kuala Baram, here today (Jan 18).

The victims, a man and a woman, both aged 37, were found dead inside the building after it was completely destroyed by the blaze, the State Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said.

Fire crews received an emergency call at 5.59 am but faced a 40-kilometre journey to the hostel.

By the time firefighters from the Lopeng station arrived at 8.20 am, the fire had already been extinguished by estate workers.

The single-storey structure, comprising two adjoining housing units, was razed entirely. The victims were occupants of one unit, while six others, including a child, escaped from the neighbouring unit as the fire spread.

Firefighters carried out safety monitoring at the scene before handing over the victims’ remains to the police for further investigation. No injuries were reported among the survivors.

The cause of the fire has not yet been determined.

Police are treating the case as a sudden death pending further inquiries.
