KUCHING: Police investigations into the murder of a married couple in Sri Aman have found that the weapon used in the incident contained only the DNA of the two victims, with no other DNA detected, indicating no involvement of a third party.

Sarawak Police Commissioner Datuk Mohamad Zainal Abdullah said the finding was based on forensic analysis conducted by the Chemistry Department, alongside post-mortem examinations carried out on both victims.

“Based on the results of our investigation so far, the weapon involved only had DNA belonging to the two victims, namely the husband and wife,” he told reporters after attending the Sarawak Police Contingent headquarters (IPK) monthly assembly at the parade ground here today.

He added that police had also found no signs of forced entry at the house and no family belongings were missing, further strengthening the inference that the incident only involved the couple.

Mohamad Zainal said police had recorded around 30 statements from witnesses, including family members, friends, colleagues, teachers and neighbours, to assist in the investigation.

He said the investigation was largely complete, with police now awaiting forensic analysis of the victims’ mobile phones before drawing a final conclusion on the motive.

“According to preliminary findings, the husband was believed to have been experiencing depression, based on witness statements, particularly following his recent transfer and appointment as a headmaster at one of the school in Sri Aman.

“However, we are still waiting for the forensic report on the mobile phones to determine whether there are other factors that could help establish the actual motive behind the deaths of both victims,” he said.

Mohamad Zainal added that the case has not yet been classified as No Further Action (NFA), as investigations are still ongoing pending the final forensic findings.

Earlier, post-mortem examinations found that the male victim sustained 11 stab wounds to the neck and chest, while his wife died from a stab wound to the neck.

Mohamad Zainal said the post-mortem examinations were conducted on Jan 15, at the Forensic Department of Sarawak General Hospital (HUS) by a pathologist.

“The post-mortem confirmed that the cause of death of the male victim was injuries resulting from stab wounds to the neck and chest. The female victim, meanwhile, died from injuries caused by a stab wound to the neck,” he said.

The incident occurred on the morning of Jan 14 at a house in Taman Mutiara, Jalan Brayun, Sri Aman, where the couple were found dead.

The victims were well-known civil servants, with the 45-year-old husband serving as a headmaster at a primary school, while his 44-year-old wife worked as a nurse.

The tragedy shocked the local community and their colleagues, and left behind three children aged nine, 16 and 17, who lost both parents in the incident.
