ASEAN Para Games: Malaysia achieves medal targets in Thailand

NAKHON RATCHASIMA: The Malaysian contingent to the ASEAN Para Games 2025 in Thailand has more than proven themselves after having achieved the medal targets set – 181 medals overall with 55 gold medals – at the Games, which is set to close tomorrow (Tuesday, Jan 26).

Para long jumper, Wong Kar Gee, won the 55th gold medal in the T12 men’s long jump event with a new Games record distance of 6.83 metres, and wheelchair tennis player, Mohamad Yusshazwan Yusuf, contributed Malaysia’s 181st medal when he defeated Kittiphong Wongcharoen of Thailand 2-0 in the men’s singles final.

Malaysia’s final haul for the Games stand at an impressive 201 medals overall, with 64 gold, 64 silver and 73 bronze medals, a reflection of the consistent performance and extraordinary fighting spirit displayed by Malaysia’s para athletes, as well as the effectiveness of planning, training programmes and contiunous support from various parties.

Malaysia’s medals came from various sports including athletics, para badminton, swimming and tenpin bowling, a remarkable display of the overall strength and depth of the national contingent.

Several athletes also achieved major milestones and personal bests, including para swimmer, Abdul Halim Mohammad, who won five gold medals and smashed two Games records.

As the Games end with tomorrow’s closing ceremony, Malaysia finishes third in medal standings, a clearly positive development in efforts to improve the country’s para sports and will form a vital foundation for preparations for the Commonwealth Games 2026, Para Asian Games 2026, ASEAN Para Games 2027 in Malaysia, and the Paralympic Games 2028 in Los Angeles, the United States. – BERNAMA
