Limbang District Council has been tasked to come outwith a project paper for submission to the federal government for consideration, Agriculture Assistant Minister Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail disclosed.

“As of now, however, it is still at the policy stage. If the application is finally approved in the future, Limbang will be the third duty free zone in Malaysia after Langkawi in Peninsular Malaysia and the Labuan Federal Territory,” he added.

Abdul Rahman, who is also Bukit Kota assemblyman, said Limbang would need to upgrade existing infrastructure in order for it to be a duty free zone.

“The federal government will conduct a survey to see whether the proposal to make a Limbang a duty free zone can be implemented. Otherwise, the proposal will be put on hold until all requirements have been duly fulfilled,” he said.

Abdul Rahman said Limbang had received huge allocations to implement mega projects within two years’ time.

The projects included the upgrading of the Limbang Waterfront, building of an overhead bridge, Taman Awam Limbang and various other projects worth RM15 million, he explained.
