SRI AMAN: Police arrested a 49-year-old civil servant in connection with a fatal hit-and-run accident that occurred in the district on Feb 8.
Police chief Supt. Dennis Bunyam said the suspect was tracked down and later surrendered himself at the Sri Aman police headquarters (IPD)
“The suspect has been detained along with an SUV believed to be involved in the incident for further investigation,” he said in a statement.
He added that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.
Dennis also expressed appreciation to members of the public who came forward with information and cooperated with the police, which led to the suspect being located and apprehended.
The police urged anyone with additional information related to the case to come forward to assist in ongoing investigations.
In the early hours of Sunday (Feb 8), a married couple were struck by a vehicle in a hit-and-run incident at KM-7 Jalan Sri Aman after they had stopped on the road shoulder to change a flat tyre.
The driver, 46-year-old Ranggau Berandak, later died while receiving treatment at Sri Aman Hospital, while his 36-year-old wife sustained serious injuries and remains under treatment at the same hospital.
