SIBU: A routine midday drive turned fatal when a cement truck slammed into a Toyota Hilux along Jalan Deshon here today (Feb 10), crushing the vehicle and killing its driver on the spot.

The Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) said the incident occurred at around 12.18 pm.

The victim, identified as Ting Teck Kee, 60, was trapped inside his vehicle after the collision.

Firefighters from the Sungai Merah station rushed to the scene and attempted to free Ting using airbags, but the effort was unsuccessful due to the severity of the impact.

Assistance from a private crane was also initially ineffective, and it was only after a second crane was deployed that rescuers were able to extract him.

Paramedics later confirmed that Ting had died at the scene. His body was subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation.

Once both vehicles were removed, the road was cleared and the operation brought to a close.
