KUCHING: The Bau Civic Centre is set to undergo a major upgrade with the installation of an escalator and new lift systems.

The RM3-million project will be implemented under the fund provided by Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA) and is expected to be completed within one year from now.

According to Deputy Minister for Transport (Riverine and Marine), Datuk Henry Harry Jinep, the improvement works are aimed at enhancing accessibility and overall convenience for visitors and the local community who frequently utilise the civic centre for official functions, social gatherings and public events.

The Tasik Biru assemblyman said with the installation of the escalator, the Civic Centre will be the first building in the historic gold-mining town of Bau to be equipped with such modern facilities.

“We decide to the install the escalator and new lifts because the Civic Centre’s frequency of usage is very high and so many events are being organised here,” he said.

Once completed, the modern facilities will benefit members of the public especially senior citizens, persons with disabilities and families with young children to move between floors.

Aside from that, the new facilities are expected to elevate the building’s status as a more inclusive and user-friendly venue for government programmes, exhibitions, cultural performances and community meetings, to reflect Bau’s steady development and growing population needs.

The Bau Civic Centre has long served as a central hub for community interaction and deserves improvements that match modern standards.
