MIRI: Sarawak Energy, in collaboration with Sarawak Forestry Corporation, planted 300 native tree seedlings at Piasau Nature Reserve on Febuary 8, reinforcing its long-term commitment to environmental sustainability and biodiversity conservation across the state.

The initiative forms part of Sarawak Energy’s Tree Planting, Protection and Habitat Restoration Campaign, which aims to plant and protect 500,000 trees by 2030.

About 30 senior leaders and employees participated in the programme.

Chief executive officer, Datuk Sharbini Suhaili, said the initiative reflects the company’s responsibility to ensure environmental stewardship remains integral to its growth.

“Through sustained reforestation and habitat restoration efforts, we aim to contribute meaningfully to the preservation of Sarawak’s rich natural heritage for future generations,” he said, adding that renewable energy development must proceed with due care for ecosystems and biodiversity.

The seedlings planted comprised native species such as kara (Ficus variegata), honey jackfruit (Artocarpus integer), terap (Artocarpus odoratissimus), buah kristal (Pometia pinnata) and pulur (Aglaia), selected to support ecological restoration and enhance habitat diversity within the reserve.

Located in Miri, Piasau Nature Reserve is an important urban sanctuary known for its hornbill population.

The tree-planting activity contributes to strengthening urban biodiversity and ongoing conservation efforts in the rapidly developing area.

Participants also visited the reserve’s visitor centre, where they were briefed on current reforestation and conservation initiatives, including efforts to protect and rehabilitate hornbill habitats.

As of December 26, 2025, Sarawak Energy has planted more than 247,000 trees statewide under the campaign, including over 58,000 trees in 2025 alone, as it progresses towards its 500,000-tree target by 2030.

The campaign underscores the company’s broader commitment to balancing energy development with environmental responsibility in line with Sarawak’s sustainable growth aspirations.
