PADAWAN: Tourism facilities at Kampung Annah Rais, famed for its centuries-old Bidayuh longhouse, will be upgraded under an initiative by the Greater Kuching Coordinated Development Agency (GKCDA).
The upgrading project, identified and recommened by Mambong state assemblyman, Datuk Dr Jerip Susil, is aimed at enhancing visitors’ comfort and strengthening the village’s position as one of Sarawak’s leading cultural tourism destinations.
Works are expected to focus on improving basic amenities like public carparks, the grandstand, some section of the longhouse, river protection and turfing, and drainage and irrigation system
GKCDA’s Special Officer, Datuk Ik Pahon Joyik, said the initiative reflects the Sarawak Government and the agency’s commitment to uplifting rural tourism infrastructure while preserving the unique identity of local communities.
“We want to ensure that tourism development in Annah Rais benefits the villagers directly while maintaining the authenticity of the Bidayuh heritage,” he said recently.
Ik Pahon added that better facilities would provide greater convenience and safety for visitors, especially during peak tourism seasons, while creating opportunities for locals to expand homestay services, handicraft sales and cultural performances.
Kampung Annah Rais, located about 60 kilometres from Kuching, is well-known for its traditional longhouse, which houses dozens of families under one roof connected by a long communal verandah known as the awah.
The longhouse, believed to be over 100 years old, remains one of the most accessible and well-preserved Bidayuh settlements in Sarawak.
Apart from experiencing traditional architecture and lifestyle, visitors can enjoy nearby natural hot springs, scenic countryside views, and cultural activities such as bamboo music performances and traditional dance presentations.
The upgrading project is expected to further boost visitor arrivals and stimulate the local economy, positioning Annah Rais as a model for sustainable rural tourism development in the Greater Kuching area.
According to Ik Pahon, RM6.5 million has been allocated for the proposed project, which will be implemented by the Padawan Municipal Council (MPP).
