KUCHING: The renovation and transformation works on Sarawak’s first Performing Arts Centre is progressing steadily, with the project currently 29 per cent completed.

Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts Minister, Datuk Seri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, said that the project is slightly ahead by one to two per cent compared to the scheduled progress.

“At the moment, I am at the Old State Legislative Assembly (DUN) building which we are currently renovating to become our first Performing Arts Centre.

“This is our first visit to review the progress of the renovation works. Alhamdulillah, we have been informed by the Public Works Department (PWD) and the developer that the project is on schedule.

“In fact, the renovation stage is not behind time; it is actually ahead of schedule by about one to two per cent,” he said.

He said this when met by reporters after his site visit to the project at Old DUN building here today.

Abdul Karim said the total cost of the project is RM247 million, covering the main building and the adjacent Lapau Hall building.

“We have gone inside to inspect the condition, and it looks very beautiful. Once completed, it will be truly impressive,” he said.

He added that the centre will have a seating capacity of approximately 600 and is expected to meet expectations of a fully equipped Performing Arts Centre.

“The project is expected to be completed by June 2027, just in time before the SEA Games,” he said.
