MERADONG: Police arrested a local man in his 40s for allegedly being involved in a phone scam case where a victim lost RM49,850.

Meradong police chief DSP Tansli Mering said the suspect was detained at about 10.50am on Monday (Mar 2) by a team from the Commercial Crime Investigation Division (CCID) of the district police headquarters (IPD).

He said the suspect is believed to be involved in a scam by impersonating a courier service officer.

“The victim received a call from a man claiming to be an officer from DHL Melaka, alleging that the victim had sent prohibited items and was instructed to transfer money as a protective measure.

“The total reported loss amounted to RM49,850,” he said in a statement.

Tansli said the suspect is also linked to a police report lodged in Serian. However, checks revealed that he has no prior criminal record.

The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code, which carries a jail term of between one and 10 years, whipping and a fine upon conviction.

He advised the public to verify suspicious calls with the police before making any financial transactions to third parties.

Victims of online scams may contact the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) hotline at 997 or the Bintangor police station at 084-693222.
