KUALA LUMPUR: Deportivo Alaves said it respects the ruling by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in upholding a 12-month suspension on defender, Facundo Garces, from participating in official matches.
In a statement, the Spanish club also confirmed that Garces will remain with the team and continue training during the suspension period.
“According to the announced decision, the player is banned from playing official matches for a period of 12 months, with the time already served being counted towards this sanction.
“Consequently, the suspension from playing matches begins March 5, and includes the period between Sept 25, 2025 and Jan 26, 2026, during which the sanction has already been effectively served.
“Furthermore, in accordance with the resolution, the sanction is limited to participation in matches, so Garces will be able to continue training and developing his professional activity with the club during this period,” the club said.
Garces is one of seven players sanctioned by the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) for falsifying naturalisation and eligibility documents to represent the Malaysian national squad.
On Thursday, CAS partially upheld an appeal by the seven players against the FIFA sanction and ruled that the CHF350,000 (approximately RM1.8 million) fine on the Football Association of Malaysia concerning the case was justified and proportionate. – BERNAMA
